In my younger days, on the journey through music (see A Condensed History – pt 1 thru 6) as a disciple to the alter of Rock, I came across \u201cVoyage of the Acolyte\u201d. A solo album by Steve Hackett of Genesis<\/a> fame. Two members of Genesis play on the album with Hackett. I voyaged with this album, it truly took me to another place. I played it again this morning and it sounded as wonderful now, as it did then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cover art was created in 1975 by Kim Poor<\/a> (to whom the album was dedicated to).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album was on The Famous Charisma Label<\/a> – that logo of the Mad Hatter makes the greatest centre of any piece of vinyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Album<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This album is deals with the theme of Tarot, using cards from the Tarot deck to title its tracks and inform its content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Track Run Through<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Side 1<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. \u201cAce of Wands\u201d – thrown straight in Arp Synth slows towards the end – restarts apace – that guitar.<\/li>
  2. \u201cHands of the Priestess Part I\u201d – beautiful – flute – words like mournful, awakening, peaceful<\/li>
  3. \u201cA Tower Struck Down\u201d – menacing – inner gatefold watercolour of the tower – cough lol – continue<\/li>
  4. \u201cHands of the Priestess Part II\u201d –<\/li>
  5. \u201cThe Hermit\u201d – makes me think of ELP<\/a> and some of their songs, like “Take a Pebble” – first track with lyrics – \u201cThe Mantle of attainment\u201d I love those words – delicate – beautiful guitar\u2026<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Side 2<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    1. “Star of Sirius” – vocal – acoustic, synth then breaks into driving beat – pastoral – driving beat – Bass by Johnny Gustafson.<\/li>
    2. The delicate start of \u201cThe Lovers\u201d – Sally Oldfield vocals<\/li>
    3. “Shadow of the Hierophant” – builds, just how I like songs to do – plaintiff – rises then falls, quietly into nothingness. I find myself whistling the refrain long after the track has finished.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      That word Hierophant, it\u2019s wonderful. I remember looking it up at the time. I had to look it up again<\/a>, just to be sure of what it meant. It is a word inexorably linked with Tarot. It conjures up the mysterious, uncommon, otherworldly\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sally Oldfield vocals – she sings on this album, on the track – \u201cThe Lovers\u201d. I have her 1978 album > \u201cWater Bearer\u201d and hadn\u2019t twigged she sang on “Voyage” until now. I bought the \u201cWater Bearer\u201d album for the Tolkien references. I’m a big Tolkien fan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I wrote about this album cover<\/a> for my CSE English Language (I was required to take \u2018O\u2019 Level & CSE for English). I have always loved it, it made a big impression upon me. The whole package of cover art, music, theme comes together as a beautiful album. So great to play again today. I won\u2019t leave it so long to play again in future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This is Progressive Rock<\/a> at its finest \u2013 a mystical voyage, executed with atmosphere \u2013 A holy grail of albums \u2013 A<\/strong>bsolutely R<\/strong>ecommended<\/p>\n\n\n\n
